Digital Transformation Efforts and Industry 4.0
“All manufacturing businesses aim to leverage the opportunities brought by digital transformation to reduce costs, increase productivity and quality, and enhance profitability. To achieve this, they integrate digital tools into their processes through comprehensive or local projects and strive to develop the human resources to manage this transformation.
However, success is not always achieved in the processes of developing or adopting digital tools within businesses. Especially our SMEs do not have the infrastructure and human resources to identify needs and develop the right product at economical conditions. Therefore, they need a scale to accurately analyze their digital transformation needs, which should be based on international standards and academically accepted, and evaluate businesses in different dimensions and sub-dimensions.
Recognizing this need, we have developed the Digital Move Scale to accurately assess the digital transformation needs of SMEs in Turkey. In developing the scale, we examined more than twenty established scales in this field and conducted an extensive literature review. With the participation of our academic working group and industry stakeholders, we developed the Digital Move Index by evaluating the digital maturity level with 5 main dimensions and 24 sub-dimensions: Information Systems, Resources, Strategy and Organization, Culture, and Production. We conducted field validations and statistical analyses of our scale and made it available for widespread use.

Recognizing this need in the field of digital transformation, we developed our SME-focused digital transformation check-up tool, the Digital MOVE Index, in 2019. In the development process of the Digital MOVE Index, a wide-ranging academic team collaborated with an experienced team of field experts to create a scale that complies with global standards and is tailored to the processes of SMEs in Turkey.
In the scale we have developed, we determine the Digital MOVE Index by evaluating the digital maturity level of a business with 5 main dimensions and 24 sub-dimensions: Information Systems, Resources, Strategy and Organization, Culture, and Production. With our scale, we conducted field applications in businesses across Turkey and analyzed the digital maturity levels of a wide range of businesses, including those listed among Turkey's top 500 companies, and reported our findings.

In the digital transformation processes in the industrial sector worldwide, there are three main factors: people, technology, and processes. Thus, the digital transformation involves developing and managing the human resources to develop technologies, innovating technologies in the industrial field, and implementing these applications in businesses as a planned process rather than localized applications.
Turkey has a great potential in the industrial sector to both develop digital transformation technologies and train human resources, thanks to its young population. However, the crucial point here is to train this young population in vocational and technical education through innovative educational models.
